Magnesia Carbon Bricks

Introduction

Magnesia Carbon Refractory is a composite material based on magnesium oxide. As a kind of basic refractory which is made from magnesia, graphite as raw material, resin as binder, with high pressure moulded and low temperature treatment.

Magnesia is the main constituent of MgO-C bricks which contains in the scope of 65~99% the total batch. Three different types of magnesia raw materials are used to produce MgO-C brick. These are (i) sea water magnesia produced by firing Mg(OH)₂ (magnesium hydro-oxide), extracted from sea water, (ii) sintered magnesia produced from natural magnesite (MgCO₃) by sintering, and (iii) fused magnesia produced by melting of magnesia. The purity, crystal grain size, crystal grain boundary flux lime / silica ratio, and other properties of the magnesia aggregate affect the corrosion resistance of MgO-C bricks. Hence, it is necessary to select appropriate magnesia aggregate types to suit specific lining areas of the BOF.
Magnesia-carbon (MgO-C) refractory is important and widely used refractory in the steelmaking. It is characterized by a reduced slag infiltration depth and a high thermal shock resistance due to its carbon (C) content. Applications of this refractory not only include wear linings in basic oxygen furnace (BOF), electric arc furnace (EAF), and steel ladle, but also functional products such as purging and taphole bricks. The success of the use of basic MgO-C refractory in the steelmaking is based on its good properties of resistance to erosion, corrosion, and thermal shock.

Magnesia Carbon Bricks own good slag erosion resistance and graphite high thermal conductivity and low dilatability mixed together. Thus Mg-C brick has features of high refractoriness, good thermal shock resistance, erosion resistance, and has good performance in I&S industry, including BOF, EAF, LF.

The main raw materials used in the production of MgO-C bricks are magnesia aggregate, graphite, resins, and other additives.

Properties

l   Material and Technique: Magnesia-Carbon brick is resin-bonded brick made from dead-burned or fused magnesia and graphite. Anti-oxidant is added if required.

l   Properties: Magnesia-Carbon brick has good performance in thermal resistance, corrosion resistance, and spalling resistance.

l   Application: widely used in converters, EAFs, ladles, and refining furnaces.

l   Other Carbon-Containing refractory material.

Characteristics

l   Excellent resistance in slag abrasion

l   Higher temperate resistant with good refractoriness

l   Lower creep in high temp.

l   Good thermal shock resistance performance

l   Not easily wet with slag

Application

It is used mainly in refining furnaces such as UOD, AOD and LF ( Ladle Furnace ).
